Cleaning kits

Our program also provides cleaning kits to residents. The kit includes a soapy cleaner, paper towels, mop, rubber gloves, trash bags, sponges, and a spray bottle. Lead dust hazards are most easily removed by using soapy water and wiping it away from the affected surface.

HEPA Vacuum Lending Program

Our program also operates a HEPA vacuum lending program. Studies show that regular vacuums allow tiny dust particles to exit through their exhaust systems. HEPA vacuums are safer to use since they have a finer filter that traps tiny lead dust particles that would otherwise be exhausted back out of a regular vacuum. HEPA vacuums are usually checked out for 30 days at a time, and are especially helpful in situations where remodeling is being performed on an older home or where a lead-poisoned child resides.

Consumer Product Screening

We also offer lead screening for consumer products. Residents can set up an appointment and bring items of concern to our office for testing. Consumer Items in the past that have been known to contain lead include vinyl baby bibs, jewelry and charms, imported candy and makeup, imported spices, wooden and plastic toys, dishware, and pottery.
